Boys 4th at state, highest Patriot finish!

The State XC Championships

This past Saturday the boys placed fourth at the state meet, the highest finish in school history. They were one point shy of third. Patrick Lowry had the highest place finish in school history for boys with a 6th-place All-State performance. James Fillmore, Carlos Garcia, Conner Utter, Jacob Casey, Kaiden Brewer, and Connor Balcom competed for the state team. The team won the school's 8th conference championship (most in the school), first regional championship, and the highest place at the state meet. Nice work!!!

Rena Johnson qualified as an individual and had a tremendous season. She placed 32nd at the state meet and with her huge improvements this season will have some great times on the track.

Boys win Regionals! Rena advances to states!

The region meet was at Great Meadows and the boys had a great day. All seven boys ran their lifetime best or their second fastest time ever. It was the first region championship title in school history! After battling through sickness last week and squeaking out the boys' 8th district championship, they were able to win much more convincingly at Regionals. Patrick bounced back from his 6th-place district performances to place 3rd in 15:48. Our pack moved up nicely and by 2 miles were winning the meet. Jacob Casey who had been very sick at districts (18th) was one place better at regionals and just missed All-Region honors. We had lifetime bests from Carlos Garcia, Conner Utter, James Fillmore, Jacob Casey, and Conner Balcom. Congratulations guys!

Patrick Lowry 3rd 15:48

Carlos Garcia 8th 16:25 (PR)

Conner Utter 11th 16:28 (PR)

James Fillmore 12th 16:32 (PR)

Jacob Casey 17th 16:46 (PR)

Connor Balcom 29th 17:21 (PR)

Kaiden Brewer 39th 17:51

The girls were short our season number one runner with Anna Rigby, who got a late season injury right before districts, and then our season number four, Zoe Patterson twisted her ankle and was unable to compete. The girls ran very tough with Rena Johnson leading the way. Rena placed 7th overall and ran a huge personal best in 19:23 to qualify for the state meet and earn All-Region honors. Sidney Nolan was our number two running 20:47 (21st), Freshman Camila Weber finished in 27th (21:32), Sherlyn Philip was 37th (22:01), senior Kira Baker last cross country meet in a Patriot jersey was 49th (24:09) for her fastest time ever and almost six minutes faster than last year's personal best, Daniela Ansah 51st (25:18), and freshman Addie Hoopes 53rd in 26:41.

Boys win district championship, girls move on to regionals!

The Cedar Run District Championships were Wednesday and were a little too exciting. The boys were the big-time favorites to three-peat. We were going into the meet not healthy though, with Jacob Casey finally starting to run after being very sick last week and Patrick Lowry, easily the top runner in the district, was sick over the weekend and missed school on Monday. Battlefield’s top two were able to get away from our guys and go 1-2. Carlos Garcia followed a few seconds back to place third, followed by James Fillmore (4th), Conner Utter (5th), and Patrick Lowry in 6th. That pack helped nullify Battlefield's 1-2 finish. Battlefield then went 7th and 9th. We were up by one point through four runners (18 to 19). Jacob was given the plan to stay with Battlefield’s fifth and make sure to beat him. The entire race the two were together with Jacob placing 18th, one second in front. Even though the time was almost a minute slower than what Jacob normally runs, it was probably the hardest race he has run due to coming off being sick. Patriot 36, Battlefield 38. If Jacob wasn’t able to beat Battlefield’s fifth, it would have been a tie, IF he could hold on to one spot back. In a tie, it would have gone to the tiebreaker, which is the team with the best 6th runner. Kaiden Brewer (placed 22nd) beat Battlefield’s sixth by one spot. Connor Balcom finished 26th, beating Battlefield 7th by two spots. The meet was decided by a second. All season we were the dominant team in the conference, but timing is everything. We were not healthy, but our front guys pack it up and beat some guys that got them at Albermarle, and Jacob was able to get there fifth with Kaiden winning the battle of the tiebreakers if needed. Awesome running guys! It was the boys' seventh conference title and third in a row. We need to be healthy for regionals.

The girls were favored to be third and earn the last spot in the regional meet. Of course, it wouldn’t be an easy meet for the girls as well. The battlefield was the big-time favorite to repeat. OP beat us at Oatlands and a slight favorite over us. Freedom was ranked fourth coming into the meet. On Monday Anna was not able to run due to pain in her leg. Tuesday it felt a lot better and we cross-trained. Anna went on the warm-up but wasn’t able to complete it. We pulled her from the race. If her season was to go on, it would depend on the girls to get out of the conference.

At the halfway point Freedom was beating us in every position but the #2 spot. At two miles we moved up and now we're just ahead of Freedom except in the 1st and 5th positions. At the finish, Rena Johnson ran solid to lead the team and placed 7th, and was very close to the top five. She was two spots behind freedom’s number one. Sidney Nolan moved up well and placed 10th, two spots ahead of Freedom’s number two. At this point, we are tied. Zoe Patterson just missed All-Conference honors with a 16th place finish, Freedom third placed one spot back in 17th. Camila placed 21st with Freedom's fourth one spot back. Sherlyn had the race of her life and passed two Freedom girls at the end. She was 23rd, Freedom 5th was 24th. Kira ran a lifetime best for 36th and Addie Hoopes was 40th.

We squeaked out a third-place finish by three points. Our season moves on to regionals and Freedom’s season is over. It was incredibly close and our girls ran so tough. We get another week and we will have Anna back. If Anna finished with Rena we would have finished second. We will have a good shot to be top three at regionals. Battlefield will win, but Osborne Park, Forest Park, Colonial Forge, and us have a good shot for the other two spots.

Post season starting

We finished our last regular season meet with a great day for most of the team. The varsity boys were 5th out of 43 teams, and that was without Jacob Casey. Patrick Lowry led the team with a 7th-place finish in 15:58.0. Carlos Garcia ran 16:31 for a big personal best. Connor Utter ran 16:55 for a season-best and James Fillmore was a little over 17 minutes. Kaiden Brewer had a big day running 17:40 and Connor Balcolm was a little further back. Guys are ready to run fast, just need a little rest and they will be ready!

On the JV side of things we had big PR's. Jackson Santiago ran 18:51 to lead the squad. Hayden Moss also broke 19 with his 18:59.9 performance. Also running personal bests was Marcus Burleson, Ryan Tibbs, Hayden Trexel, Kevin Miner, James Younts, David Frost, Alex Eye, Thomas Lamonia, Hans Guitanguijo, and Ian Bergeran. We also had Caleb Dixon running his first 5K.

The girls were led by Anna Rigby in 19:30 for 29th place. Rena Johnson had a huge personal best to run 19:47 for 35th. Sidney Nolan ran her season best with a 20:38 and our two varsity freshmen, Zoe Patterson and Camila Weber had big personal bests with 21:07 and 21:09. Kira Baker ran 26:22 to our final varsity runner. Girls JV had a lot of great performances. Setting new personal bests were Erica Shanahan, Ngozi Imala, Zainab Soofi, Daniella Ansah and running her first 5K Audrey Shanahan!

Practices this week will be at Patriot at 2:30 on Monday, Wednesday, Thursday, and Friday. Tuesday will be at Groveton at 3 pm and Wendy's on Saturday at 9 am.

Huge Win For Boys XC at RVA Relays!

The boys' varsity won the RVA Relays on a very exciting night of competition at Pole Green Park in Mechanicsville. The RVA Relays featured 44 high school teams in the "A" race. The five-person relay is at night on a grass course lit up by mobile light towers dotting the course. Each runner covers 2500 meters (a little over a mile and a half).

Senior James Fillmore got things started for Patriot and was in 9th most of the race. Fillmore went through the mile in 4:57 and was able to get a few more spots before handing off in 6th in a great time of 7:24 (59 seconds faster than his time from last year!). Jacob Casey moved Patriot from 6th to 3rd very quickly, running an aggressive leg in 7:36 (37 seconds faster than last year!). Our big question going into the meet was how Conner Utter would race. Utter, running in his first race of the season, ran an awesome leg of 7:37 to move us into second. All of his hours of dedication to cross-training when he was injured paid off big time for the team. Carlos Garcia was about 26 seconds behind South County when he received the baton. At the mile, Carlos was 23 seconds back, but over the last half mile, he was able to close to within two seconds at the handoff! Carlos made up 24 seconds on South County splitting a 7:32. Patrick Lowry, running the anchor leg immediately took the lead. Lowry ended up bringing home the victory, 27 seconds over the second-place team (Glen Allen)! It was so exciting to watch! Lowry was 27 seconds faster than his time from last year. He split 7:21.

The Patriot girls varsity relay team placed 28th and were missing two of their top runners. Rena Johnson led the team with her 9:15 split, 45 seconds faster than her time from last year. Huge shoutout to Kira Baker, who anchored the team and ran four minutes faster than last year!

Patriot will compete on Wednesday at Nokesville Park for a district meet. On Saturday the team will head to Oatlands for a preview of the state course and the biggest invitational of the year.

First 5K was a very big success!

We had our big team trip to the Pole Green XC Invite in Mechanicsville and we had a very good first meet. The boys placed 5th (out of 29) led by Patrick's 4th place finish in 16:06 (a personal best!). The team ran without James Fillmore (ACT test) and Connor Utter (will be back racing soon). Placing them right behind Carlos Garcia ( 21st in 17:03) and Jacob Casey (23rd in 17:05), the team wins the meet. The girls were 11th out of 20 teams in the A varsity race and led by Anna Rigby's 14th-place finish (19:55), Sidney Nolan (48th in 21:25) and Rena Johnson (49th in 21:27). JV boys were led by Jackson Santiago (29th in 21:05), Carson Berget (34th in 21:11) and Tristin Koury (36th in 21:15). The JV boys squad finished 8th out of 20 teams. The JV girls were led by Ngozi Imala (63rd in 28:55) and Erica Shanahan (65th in 29:04). The JV girls finished 11th out of 12.

The kids were well-behaved in the hotel and at King's Dominion. Very fun trip!

Three weeks done, now time for school and competition!

We have finished our third week and have welcomed a few more student-athletes to the team. The last day to join is Tuesday, the 23rd. It took time but we met our goal of ten freshman boys and ten freshman girls. We also bolstered our sophomore class quite a bit. We are up to 58 kids. We don't have any assistant coaches yet, but my hope is this week they will be cleared by HR.

With school starting the schedule obviously changes quite a bit. For the first week, we will be at Patriot M-T-W-F and our first competition will also take place at Patriot on Saturday night. Thursday will be at the Bristow Station Battlefield. The race on Saturday will be on the track and not a cross-country course. The times the kids run will help me seed them for their first cross country meet on September 10th.

If you have not joined the Remind group please do so. Download the app (Remind) and use the code 2022phscr

If you have not ordered your team uniform please do so now. The deadline to tomorrow (it has been extended several times). https://stores.athletesmark.com/patriot_XC/shop/home

This week's practices, 8/22-8/27 (School starts)

Monday 2:30 pm at the track. Done at 5 pm.

Tuesday 2:30 pm at the gym, done at 4:30 pm.

Wednesday 2:30 pm at the gym, done by 5 pm.

Thursday 3:00 pm at Bristow Station Battlefield. Done at 4:45 pm.

Friday 2:30 pm at the gym, done at 4:30 pm.

Saturday meet at the Patriot track with Osborne, Gainesville, and maybe one to two others. Please be at the track at 4:55 pm if racing the 2K. 5:30 pm for everyone else.

First week was good, the second week better!

Great week of training. The last two days we had a break in the weather which made running much more enjoyable. The beginners are already showing a lot of improvement from the first week. Our top group had a great summer of training and it is really showing in practice. A couple of shoutouts to Joseph, Balcom, Patrick, Anna, James F, Tristin, Meghan, Jacob, Ben, Kira and others for having such a great summer of training. We also have had some freshmen who have been with us most of the summer and are getting very fit. Zoe Patterson stands out. It's a great group I get to coach and we are working hard and getting better. We had our best attendance for a Saturday run today. It was fun seeing all the other teams out there at the battlefield training.

* Some reminders! Team uniforms, shirts, and spirit wear is due. Please have it done by 8/14. Order goes in on the 15th in the morning so we can get the gear in 2-3 weeks.

* IMPACT testing. 23 kids have it done but we need two more sessions to get everyone else done. Once I hear from Toby, our athletic trainer I will pass on the makeup dates.

* Our last camp day is on Wednesday, on the 17th. Practice is 8am to 2pm and the kids need a lunch and change of clothes.

* Orientation is on the 18th from 12 to 2pm. We will be done with practice that morning by 9:45am.

Practice schedule for 8/15-8/20:

Monday 8am to 10:30am at Patriot

Tuesday 8am to 9:30am at Brownsville Parking lot off of Groveton
